Bold Face Names With Big Engagement Rings

Almost 5.5 million likes have lit up Instagram since Jennifer Lopez posted a photo of the engagement ring that Alex Rodriguez presented to her in March: an emerald-cut solitaire diamond on a platinum band. (Kim Kardashian West, Naomi Campbell and Olivier Rousteing of Balmain were among the fans.)

But it was not the only classic solitaire in the news.
Jennifer Lawrence got an emerald-cut diamond on a platinum band from her art dealer fiancé, Cooke Maroney. And Katherine Schwarzenegger accepted a cushion-cut diamond from Chris Pratt (Peter Quill in “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

Other recent engagements have featured rings with a bit more bling, like the oval diamond with a pavé diamond band by Jennifer Meyer that “Supergirl” Melissa Benoist received from her co-star Chris Wood. Then there’s the floral look — an oval-cut ruby surrounded by eight white diamond petals set on a yellow gold band — that Orlando Bloom chose for Katy Perry.

And here are details of two more celebrity couples and rings:

She is the 22-year-old model and daughter of the actor Stephen Baldwin, and Alec Baldwin’s niece. He is the 25-year-old Canadian pop star, discovered at 14 singing covers on YouTube. (They married in a civil service last fall, but plans for a religious service and party are pending.)

THE DESIGNER Jack Solowiejczyk, chief executive of the family jewelers Solow & Co., founded in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1926 and now headquartered in New York.

THE RING A classic-cut oval-shaped diamond on an 18-karat yellow gold band. Why did Mr. Bieber choose the shape? “The oval shape fitted her long hand and her long fingers,” Mr.

Solowiejczyk said. He wouldn’t disclose the diamond’s size, other than to say it was more than five carats but less than 10.

DESIGN DETAIL “The ring is all about the center diamond and making sure nothing competes with it,” Mr. Solowiejczyk said, so small, unobtrusive claw prongs were used just to keep the diamond in place.

DESIGNER CHOICE Solow & Co. was recommended by Mr. Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun. “Justin I know for many years through the relationship I have with his manager,” Mr. Solowiejczyk said. “Scooter’s dad is one of my best friends.”

OTHER CLAIM TO FAME The jeweler made the cushion-cut diamond on a diamond-studded band that John Legend presented to Chrissy Teigen in 2011.

THE BUZZ Last August when the then-Ms. Baldwin posted a selfie from fashion camp on Instagram Stories, Harper’s Bazaar was prompted to comment: “as if anyone could look at anything but her ring.” The British tabloid The Sun said it “is six times the size of a regular engagement ring.” And when Seventeen.com ran an online poll asking readers if they liked the ring, 71 percent of the responders voted “Um yes! how could you not?” while 29 percent opted for “It’s way too big for me. I like something more subtle.”

 Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman

Ms. Kravitz, 30, is an actress, singer and model, and the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. Mr. Glusman, 31, also is an actor (Tom Ford’s 2016 film “Nocturnal Animals”).

THE DESIGNER Unknown. The vintage ring was sold by Mia Moross, founder of The One I Love NYC antique jewelry store, operating in the West Village of New York since 2013. (She also is designing Ms. Kravitz’s wedding band. The wedding date has not been announced.)

THE RING Five oval-shaped rose-cut diamonds sit on an 18-karat gold band. The stones are collet set: the metal goes around the stone and the artisans “would pinch it like how you pinch a pie crust around the corners,” Ms. Moross said. She believes the ring was made in London between 1800 and 1835.

DESIGN DETAIL The ring was resized for Ms. Kravitz’s finger because “the ring was a little bit larger than her ring size,” Ms. Moross said; rings were worn over gloves during the Georgian and Victorian eras so they generally were sized a bit larger than today’s standard.

DESIGNER CHOICE Ms. Kravitz had seen the ring on the shop’s Instagram account. “Zoë followed me on Instagram and I did not know that at the time,” the jeweler said.

OTHER CLAIM TO FAME Jennifer Lawrence wore one of the store’s vintage chokers when she appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to promote the 2016 “X-Men: Apocalypse” and has worn other pieces. “I‘ve never met her personally, just gone through her stylist,” Ms. Moross said. Other fans include Liv Tyler and Vanessa Ray (“Pretty Little Liars”).

THE BUZZ The size caught the online site Popsugar’s attention: “Zoë Kravitz’s engagement ring is so huge, you could likely spot it from outer space,” adding that it deserved its own ZIP code. Marion Fasel, founder of The Adventurine website, wrote: “What I am shook by is that the star was wearing the ring for months and nobody noticed.” The actress had it on at the 2018 Met Gala but apparently no one realized it was an engagement ring until she announced it in the November issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
