How Thick Or Thin Should My Engagement Ring Be?

While shopping for an engagement ring, you’ll be looking for the perfect diamond. Although the diamond is very important, you shouldn’t neglect the details of the setting that it will live in. It’s important to choose a ring that will withstand the test of time.

How thin is too thin for an engagement ring?

Thin, dainty rings are in style. They’re lightweight, feminine, and can even help your diamond look bigger. A wider band (or shank) can take away from your center stone.
Thin bands are preferable for those who wish to stack their rings – if your engagement ring is too thick, you’ll have less room to add more rings to your finger for important events such as anniversaries.

We don’t recommend going any smaller than 1.5mm in width. While thinner bands can look beautiful, they will wear down and can even crack over time. Thinner bands are also more susceptible to bending and losing their circular shape. For extra security, choose a stronger metal like platinum for an engagement ring with a thinner band. If you’re rough with your jewelry or work with your hands, a band of at least 2mm will be a more durable option for you.

How can I protect my ring from wear and tear?

Unfortunately, your ring isn’t indestructible. The best way to protect your ring from damage is by taking it off during strenuous activities like working out or doing yard work – any occasion where you may be knocking your hand on things. When in doubt, leave it out.

We recommend bringing your engagement ring to a partner jeweler once a year for inspection, even if it appears to be in perfect condition. A jeweler will be able to identify any problems with your setting, such as loose prongs. While some people see a trip to the jeweler’s as an inconvenience, it’s better to be certain that your ring is secure.
